The Annunciation (The angel annouces to Mary the birth of Jesus)

L’angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea, chiamata Nàzaret, a una vergine, promessa sposa di un uomo della casa di Davide, di nome Giuseppe. La vergine si chiamava Maria. Entrando da lei, disse: “Rallégrati, piena di grazia: il Signore è con te.” L’angelo le disse: “Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio. Ed ecco, concepirai un figlio, lo darai alla luce e lo chiamerai Gesù.”

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. Maria fa visita alla cugina Elisabetta

In quei giorni Maria si alzò e andò in fretta verso la regione montuosa, in una città di Giuda. Entrata nella casa di Zaccaria, salutò Elisabetta. Elisabetta fu colmata di Spirito Santo ed esclamò a gran voce: “Benedetta tu fra le donne e benedetto il frutto del tuo grembo! E beata colei che ha creduto nell’adempimento di ciò che il Signore le ha detto.”

The Gospel According to Luke (1:39-40; 41b-42,45)

During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

In quei giorni un decreto di Cesare Augusto ordinò che si facesse il censimento di tutta la terra. Anche Giuseppe, dalla Galilea, dalla città di Nàzaret, salì in Giudea alla città di Davide chiamata Betlemme. Mentre si trovavano in quel luogo, si compirono per [Maria] i giorni del parto. Diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, lo avvolse in fasce e lo pose in una mangiatoia, perché per loro non c’era posto nell’alloggio.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Maria e Giuseppe presentano Gesù al Tempio

Portarono il bambino a Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore. Ora a Gerusalemme c’era un uomo di nome Simeone. Mosso dallo Spirito, si recò al tempio e, mentre i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesù, anch’egli lo accolse tra le braccia e benedisse Dio.

They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. He came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God.

I genitori di Gesù si recavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la festa di Pasqua. Quando egli ebbe dodici anni, vi salirono secondo la consuetudine della festa. Dopo tre giorni lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai maestri, mentre li ascoltava e li interrogava. Al vederlo restarono stupiti, e sua madre gli disse: “Figlio, perché ci hai fatto questo? Ecco, tuo padre e io, angosciati, ti cercavamo.” Ed egli rispose loro: “Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?”

Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”
