The first sorrowful mystery

Gesù prega e suda sangue nell’orto degli ulivi

The agony in the Garden (Jesus prays and sweats blood in the garden of olive trees)

Al monte degli ulivi Gesù, entrato nella lotta, pregava più intensamente, e il suo sudore diventò come gocce di sangue che cadono a terra.

He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently that his sweat became like drops of blood falling on the ground.

The second sorrowful mystery

Gesù è flagellato dai soldati

The scourging at the pillar (Jesus is scourged by soldiers)

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo (27,26)

Pilato rimise in libertà per loro Barabba e, dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesù, lo consegnò perché fosse crocifisso.

Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.

The third sorrowful mystery

Gesù è incoronato di spine

The crowning with thorns (Jesus is crowned with thorns)

I soldati spogliarono Gesù, gli fecero indossare un mantello scarlatto, intrecciarono una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero una canna nella mano destra. Poi, inginocchiandosi davanti a lui, lo deridevano: “Salve, re dei Giudei!”

They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him. Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Gesù percorre la via del Calvario portando la croce

The carrying of the cross (Jesus travels the road to Calvary carrying the cross)

Gesù, portando la croce, si avviò verso il luogo detto del Cranio, in ebraico Gòlgota, dove lo crocifissero e con lui altri due, uno da una parte e uno dall’altra, e Gesù in mezzo.

So they took Jesus, and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.

The fifth sorrowful mystery

Gesù è crocifisso e muore in croce

The crucifixion (Jesus is crucified and dies on the cross)

Stavano presso la croce di Gesù sua madre, la sorella di sua madre, Maria madre di Clèopa e Maria di Màgdala. Dopo aver preso l’aceto, Gesù disse: “È compiuto!” E, chinato il capo, consegnò lo spirito.

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus had taken the wine, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he handed over the spirit.
