May: The Month of Mary

In the Catholic faith, the month of May is entirely devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Throughout the month, Mary is honored through a variety of traditions and devotions. The early origins of honoring Mary during certain days in May date back to the thirteenth century, but the Catholic practice of the “month of Mary” is most often attributed to the Jesuits in Rome in the eighteenth century. The devotion became more widespread throughout the nineteenth century, spreading throughout the Western church and becoming commonplace by the late nineteenth century.

Common customs include a daily recitation of the rosary, special May altars constructed for Mary, the crowning of Marian statues (known as the “May Crowning”), and special Marian devotions recited after mass near icons of the Virgin Mary. Some parishes will provide special Marian readings and devotions dedicated to Mary for each day of the month. It is also common to make pilgrimages to Marian sites, visit churches dedicated to Mary, and make sacrifices in her honor.

The month of Mary therefore provides us the opportunity to honor and pray to the Virgin Mary with even more devotion, dedication, and love for her infinite mercy and blessings.

Maggio: Il Mese di Maria

Nella fede cattolica, il mese di maggio è interamente dedicato alla Beata Vergine Maria. Durante tutto il mese, Maria viene onorata con una varietà di tradizioni e devozioni. Le prime origini dell’onorare Maria in determinati giorni di maggio risalgono al XIII secolo, ma la pratica cattolica del “mese di Maria” è più spesso attribuita ai gesuiti di Roma nel XVIII secolo. La devozione divenne più diffusa nel corso del XIX secolo, diffondendosi in tutta la chiesa occidentale e diventando un luogo comune verso la fine del XIX secolo.

Le usanze comuni includono la recita quotidiana del rosario, speciali altari di maggio costruiti per Maria, l’incoronazione di statue mariane (nota come “Incoronazione di maggio”) e speciali devozioni mariane recitate dopo la messa vicino alle icone della Vergine Maria. Alcune parrocchie proporranno letture e devozioni mariane speciali dedicate a Maria per ogni giorno del mese. È anche comune fare pellegrinaggi ai luoghi mariani, visitare chiese dedicate a Maria e compiere sacrifici in suo onore.

Il mese di Maria ci offre quindi l’opportunità di onorare e pregare la Vergine Maria con ancora più devozione, dedizione e amore per la sua infinita misericordia e benedizioni.
