Come Pregare la Via Crucis (Italiano)

Segno della Croce

Nel nome del Padre e del Figlio e dello Spirito santo. Amen.

Fratelli e sorelle, il Figlio di Dio Crocifisso ci invita a seguirlo con umiltà sulla via della Croce. Egli illumini la nostra mente e riscaldi il nostro cuore perché possiamo lasciarci accogliere da lui nell’amore misericordioso del Padre e risplenda in noi, per il dono dello Spirito, la verità del vangelo. Sia benedetto Gesù, nostro Signore, che vive e regna nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

Atto Penitenziale

Pietà di noi, Signore. Contro di te abbiamo peccato.
Mostraci, Signore, la tua misericordia. E donaci la tua salvezza.
Dio onnipotente abbia misericordia di noi, perdoni i nostri peccati e ci conduca alla vita eterna. Amen.

Orazione

Signore Gesù, fa’ che camminando con te sulla via della croce, impariamo a seguirti e ad affidare a te la nostra vita perché tu possa continuare per mezzo di noi l’opera che hai iniziato. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

I.) Prima Stazione: Gesù e condannato a morte

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

I capi religiosi con gli anziani del popolo si riunirono in consiglio contro Gesù, per farlo morire. Quindi, legatolo, lo consegnarono a Pilato, il governatore romano. Pilato, dopo averlo fatto flagellare, lo condannò a morte. (Matteo 27, 1-2.26; Marco 15,1; Giovanni 19,1)

Nella Passione e nella morte, Gesù ama l’uomo così com’è, con la sua fragilità e col suo peccato. Gesù non si allontana dai peccatori ma al contrario, attraverso un amore senza limiti, cerca di risvegliare in loro, in noi, il pentimento, la conversione, la fede.

Signore Gesù, che ci hai fatto ricchi per mezzo della tua povertà. Abbi pietà di noi.
Signore Gesù, che fai di noi una nuova creatura. Abbi pietà di noi.
Signore Gesù, che vivi in noi, speranza della gloria. Abbi pietà di noi.

Signore Gesù, condannato a morte innocente, donaci un cuore libero dallo spirito di vendetta. Insegnaci a perdonare il fratello che sceglie il male. Dona ai governanti la capacità di proporre leggi giuste che riconoscano la dignità della persona umana. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

II.) Seconda Stazione: Gesù è caricato della croce

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

I soldati del governatore condussero Gesù nel pretorio e, dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono del mantello, gli fecero indossare i suoi vestiti e lo portarono via per crocifiggerlo. (Mt 27, 27-31)

Contemplando il Crocifisso noi impariamo a vedere in Gesù, con gli occhi della fede, il Figlio obbediente, il Figlio di Dio, vero uomo e vero Dio, che compie la volontà del Padre. Anche quando tutti gli sembrano contro egli continua il suo cammino fedele alla missione affidatagli dal Padre. Impariamo da lui anche noi a fare nella nostra vita la volontà di Dio nostro Padre.

Signore Gesù, vittima innocente degli uomini peccatori. Abbi pietà di noi.
Signore Gesù, servo di Dio e autore della vita. Abbi pietà di noi.
Signore Gesù, che ci hai fatto dono della tua pace. Abbi pietà di noi.

Signore Gesù, dacci la capacità di restituire a tanti fratelli, che sono nella miseria, quello che abbiamo in sovrabbondanza. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

III.) Terza Stazione: Gesù cade la prima volta

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Egli si è caricato delle nostre sofferenze, si è addossato i nostri dolori e noi lo giudicavamo castigato, percosso da Dio e umiliato. Egli è stato trafitto per i nostri delitti, schiacciato per le nostre iniquità. Il castigo che ci dà salvezza si è abbattuto su di lui; per le sue piaghe noi siamo stati guariti. (Is 53, 4-5)

Assumendo la condizione del profeta indifeso, Cristo vuole costringerci ad aprire gli occhi sulla realtà accecante della miseria. Se la nostra conversione è autentica, ed è frutto dell’amore e del perdono del Crocifisso, finisce per provocare anche una trasformazione sociale nel mondo, intorno a noi.

Signore Gesù, servo di Dio, speranza dei popoli e luce delle nazioni. Abbi pietà di noi.
Signore Gesù, che ti sei addossato i nostri dolori. Abbi pietà di noi.
Signore Gesù, che apri gli occhi ai ciechi e liberi i prigionieri. Abbi pietà di noi.

Signore Gesù, rendici degni di servire i nostri fratelli che in tutto il mondo vivono e muoiono in povertà e fame. Da’ loro quest’oggi, attraverso le nostre mani, il cibo quotidiano, e con il nostro amore comprensivo dona loro pace e gioia. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

IV.) Quarta Stazione: Gesù incontra sua Madre

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Al vederlo restarono stupiti, e sua madre gli disse: “Figlio, perché ci hai fatto questo? Ecco, tuo padre e io, angosciati, ti cercavamo.” Ed egli rispose loro: “Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io devo occuparmi delle cose del Padre mio?” Sua madre custodiva tutte queste cose nel suo cuore. (Lc 2, 48-49.51b)

Fa’, o Signore, che contemplando il mistero della Passione non perdiamo di vista le cose essenziali della vita; donaci di contemplare te, il tuo amore eucaristico, il tuo amore crocifisso, come la realtà fondamentale che ci permette di capire e riordinare tutto il resto, come l’unica realtà da cui tutte le altre ricevono luce e chiarezza. Te lo chiediamo per intercessione di colei che ha custodito nel cuore queste cose essenziali, Maria, Madre di Gesù, l’Addolorata.

Perché la famiglia sia salvaguardata e difesa. Santa Maria, madre di Dio, prega per noi.
Perché nelle famiglie prevalga l’amore e il dialogo. Santa Maria, madre di Dio, prega per noi.
Perché le famiglie siano il seme della comunità credente. Santa Maria, madre di Dio, prega per noi.

Signore Gesù, per intercessione di tua Madre, che ai piedi della croce partecipò a tutti i tuoi dolori, ti preghiamo per le famiglie, soprattutto per quelle divise. Il tuo amore le colmi così da essere rafforzate, guarite e difese. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

V.) Quinta Stazione: Gesù è aiutato a portare la croce da Simone di Cirene

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Mentre lo conducevano via presero un certo Simone di Cirene che veniva dalla campagna e gli misero addosso la croce da portare dietro a Gesù. (Lc 23, 26)

La croce rimane un puro simbolo muto di dolore, per chi non è disposto a vivere la solidarietà con Cristo e con i fratelli. Incontriamo, allora, la croce nelle nostre chiese, la mettiamo nelle nostre case, la portiamo su di noi senza avere il coraggio di prendere la nostra croce insieme a quella di Gesù.

Perché chi aiuta i poveri perseveri nonostante l’ingratitudine. Aiutaci, Signore.
Perché chi fa del volontariato sia sempre guidato dallo Spirito Santo. Aiutaci, Signore.
Perché ciascuno di noi sia disposto ad aiutare i poveri e i bisognosi. Aiutaci, Signore.

Signore Gesù, aiutato a portare la croce, dacci la forza per poter dimenticare i nostri problemi e i nostri dolori in modo da aiutare il nostro prossimo. Liberaci dall’egocentrismo, dall’autosufficienza, dall’idolatria di noi stessi e rendici come te, dono totale per gli altri. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

VI.) Sesta Stazione: La Veronica asciuga il volto di Gesù

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Io vi dico: Chiunque mi riconoscerà davanti agli uomini, anche
il Figlio dell’uomo lo riconoscerà davanti agli angeli di Dio;
ma chi mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, sarà rinnegato
davanti agli angeli di Dio. (Lc 12, 8-9)

Signore, la Veronica, è una delle tante donne generose che hai incontrato nella tua vita; il suo atteggiamento ci ricorda le donne, sempre attente ai propri figli, alla famiglia, alla comunità, in ogni cultura e religione del mondo. Per tutte loro vogliamo pregarti, perché anche nelle condizioni più difficili sappiano essere fonte di sollievo e di serenità, di unità e di pace.

Per tutte le donne. Ascolta la nostra preghiera, Signore.
Per le donne offese nella loro dignità. Ascolta la nostra preghiera, Signore.
Per tutte le donne rese schiave. Ascolta la nostra preghiera, Signore.

Signore Gesù, donaci di valorizzare e rispettare la presenza della donna nelle nostre comunità e nella nostra società. Perdona le offese alla sua dignità e aprici il cuore alla conversione. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

VII.) Settima Stazione: Gesù cade per la seconda volta

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Egli non commise peccato e non si trovò inganno sulla sua bocca, oltraggiato non rispondeva con oltraggi, e soffrendo non minacciava vendetta, ma rimetteva la sua causa a colui che giudica con giustizia. Egli portò i nostri peccati nel suo corpo sul legno della croce, perché, non vivendo più per il peccato, vivessimo per la giustizia. (1 Pt 2, 22-24).

Noi non seguiamo solo Gesù, un uomo; noi seguiamo Cristo, il Figlio del Dio vivente. Noi percorriamo un cammino divino. Dove conduce il cammino di Gesù? Porta alla risurrezione, alla destra del Padre. Questo intero cammino viene inteso allorché si parla di sequela. È in essa che si capisce perché anche la croce appartiene alla sequela: non si può pervenire diversamente alla risurrezione, alla comunione con Dio. Prima dobbiamo percorrere interamente questo cammino, se vogliamo essere servitori e testimoni di Gesù Cristo.

Per i bambini che subiscono traumi dalla società in cui viviamo. Ti preghiamo, Signore.
Per i bambini che soffrono e muoiono a causa dell’egoismo dei potenti. Ti preghiamo, Signore.
Per i bambini vittime degli abusi. Ti preghiamo, Signore.

Signore Gesù, concedici occhi capaci di vedere le lacrime dei troppi bambini schiacciati dal peso della fame, della malattia, dello sfruttamento, dell’emarginazione. Donaci cuori capaci di consolare, nutrire, accogliere, liberare. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

VIII.) Ottava Stazione: Gesù incontra le donne di Gerusalemme

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Lo seguiva una gran folla di popolo e di donne che si battevano il petto e facevano lamenti su di lui. Ma Gesù, voltandosi verso le donne, disse: “Figlie di Gerusalemme, non piangete su di me, ma piangete su voi stesse e sui vostri figli … Perché se trattano così il legno verde, che avverrà del legno secco?” (Lc 23, 27-28.31)

Dio elimina il male non ignorandolo, ma trasformandolo con la forza dell’amore. Stando insieme con gli uomini, accettandoli e perdonandoli anche quando gli preparano la croce e la morte, Gesù rivela fino a quale punto si spinge l’amore del Padre, a cui egli aderisce con obbedienza filiale: neppure la croce e la morte inducono Dio a stancarsi di amare l’uomo, a ritirarsi da lui, ad abbandonarlo al proprio destino. Il dolore della croce diventa così un modo di dichiarare il suo amore per noi.

Per i fratelli perseguitati a causa della fede, preghiamo. Dona la forza del tuo Spirito, Signore.
Per chi è ingiustamente calunniato, preghiamo. Dona la forza del tuo Spirito, Signore.
Per i missionari maltrattati, imprigionati e condannati. Dona la forza del tuo Spirito, Signore.

Signore Gesù, trattato come un malfattore, consòla i nostri fratelli che soffrono la persecuzione, la prigione, l’emarginazione a causa della fede in te. Dona loro la grazia di saper perdonare e offrire le loro sofferenze per la salvezza dei persecutori. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

IX.) Nona Stazione: Gesù cade per la terza volta

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Voi tutti che passate per la via, considerate e osservate se c’è un dolore simile al mio dolore, al dolore che ora mi tormenta … II loro giogo è sul mio collo e ha fiaccato la mia forza; il Signore mi ha messo nelle loro mani e non posso rialzarmi. (Lam 1, 12.14)

Signore, ancora una volta il tuo volto e le tue ginocchia sbattono per terra, perché ancora più pesante è diventata la tua croce. Tanti sono coloro che, ogni giorno, sotto la croce della mancanza di amore, dell’incomprensione, della superficialità, della droga cadono e non riescono più a rialzarsi. Tu solo puoi essere per noi la forza che ci tiene saldi o l’aiuto che ci fa rialzare.

Perché tutti noi sappiamo seguire il Maestro che ci invita a seguirlo. Dona il tuo coraggio, Signore.
Perché ciascuno di noi trovi in Te il vero senso della vita. Dona il tuo coraggio, Signore.
Perché sappiamo costruire una società migliore. Dona il tuo coraggio, Signore.

Signore Gesù, che al giovane ricco hai proposto di seguirti lasciando ogni cosa, dona alla gioventù di poter scoprire la bellezza della fede vissuta con coerenza ed entusiasmo. Suscita tra i giovani nuovi discepoli che sappiano seguirti nella via dell’amore e della donazione di sé. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

X.) Decima Stazione: Gesù è spogliato delle vesti

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

I soldati poi, quando ebbero crocifisso Gesù, presero le sue vesti e ne fecero quattro parti, una per ciascun soldato, e la tunica. Ora quella tunica era senza cuciture, tessuta tutta d’un pezzo da cima a fondo. (Gv 19, 23)

Richiamiamo ora alla nostra mente tutti i peccati che abbiamo commesso, tutte le volte che abbiamo offeso Dio, fatto del male agli altri e a noi stessi, tutte le volte che abbiamo fatto resistenza alla Parola di Dio e al suo amore. Di tutti questi peccati, di ciò che ciascuno di noi ha commesso, siamo chiamati ora con umiltà a pentirci, a umiliarci, a confonderci davanti al Crocifisso.

Perché nessuno più al mondo soffra la fame per causa nostra. Donaci il tuo amore, Signore.
Perché riusciamo a liberarci dalla schiavitù del consumismo. Donaci il tuo amore, Signore.
Perché nessun uomo calpesti più il diritto alla vita dei propri fratelli. Donaci il tuo amore, Signore.

Signore Gesù, spogliato delle tue vesti e della tua dignità, aiutaci a liberarci dalla nostra sete di possesso. Facci comprendere la necessità di dover cominciare a vivere uno stile di vita più sobrio e semplice, nel rispetto dei nostri fratelli a cui manca il necessario. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

XI.) Undicesima Stazione: Gesù è inchiodato sulla croce

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Erano le nove del mattino quando lo crocifissero. E l’iscrizione con il motivo della condanna diceva: Il re dei Giudei. Con lui crocifissero anche due ladroni, uno alla sua destra e uno alla sinistra. (Mc 15, 25-27)

Signore, il tuo corpo è diventato un tutt’uno con la croce. Quanto dolore, quanta sofferenza hai patito, perché tutti noi fossimo salvati. È alla tua croce che ogni giorno sono inchiodati ammalati, portatori di handicap, anziani soli. Signore dacci il coraggio di dedicarci con impegno ad alleviare il dolore e la sofferenze degli ammalati, perché altrimenti, davanti alla nostra indifferenza, tu continuerai a essere inchiodato sulla croce.

Agli ammalati, in modo particolare per quelli terminali. Dona la tua consolazione, Signore.
Agli anziani ammalati e soli. Dona la tua consolazione, Signore.
Ai disabili, ai ricoverati negli istituti, a chi è senza nessuno. Dona la tua consolazione, Signore.

Signore Gesù, inchiodato sulla croce, dona ai crocifissi di oggi, gli ammalati, gli infermi, gli anziani, i disabili, il tuo conforto. E dona a noi di saper consolare, aiutare, valorizzare, accompagnare questi nostri fratelli, sapendo scoprire in loro la tua reale presenza fra noi. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

XII.) Dodicesima Stazione: Gesù muore in croce

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Era verso mezzogiorno, quando il sole si eclissò e si fece buio su tutta la terra fino alle tre del pomeriggio. Il velo del tempio si squarciò nel mezzo. Gesù, gridando a gran voce, disse: “Padre, nelle tue mani consegno il mio spirito.” Detto questo spirò. (Lc 23, 44-46)

Signore, il tuo corpo appeso alla croce è sospeso fra cielo e terra. Tutti ti hanno abbandonato per paura: solo tua madre e qualche persona amica sono lì sotto a piangere per te. Condividi la sorte di tanti uomini e donne uccisi senza motivo, calpestati senza pietà fino ad essere schiacciati. Ti sei messo dalla loro parte per vincere con il tuo amore l’assurdità dell’odio e della violenza. A tutti noi dona la forza per amare come hai fatto tu, fino alla fine, per trasformare il mondo con il tuo amore.

Perché siamo resi capaci di seguirti fino alla morte. Donaci il tuo Spirito, Signore.
Perché siamo resi capaci di morire piuttosto che di abbandonarti. Donaci il tuo Spirito, Signore.
Perché siamo resi capaci di dare la vita per i fratelli. Donaci il tuo Spirito, Signore.

Signore Gesù, che hai condiviso la nostra natura mortale, donaci di affrontare la morte accettandola con spirito di completo abbandono alla tua volontà, consapevoli che tu sei lì ad accoglierci e a donarci la vita eterna. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

XIII.) Tredicesima Stazione: Gesù è deposto dalla croce

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Venuta la sera giunse un uomo ricco di Arimatèa, chiamato Giuseppe, il quale era diventato anche lui discepolo di Gesù. Egli andò da Pilato e gli chiese il corpo di Gesù. Allora Pilato ordinò che gli fosse consegnato. (Mt 27, 57-58)

Signore, la tua morte è simile alle morti di milioni di esseri umani: schiacciato dalla ferocia di aguzzini senza pietà. Ci vengono in mente le vittime innocenti del terrorismo, delle guerre, delle ingiustizie, ma anche la morte dei nostri cari, il loro ultimo sguardo, il loro ultimo respiro. Tu ci sei vicino ed hai condiviso fino in fondo la nostra tremenda sorte di mortali.

Ai morti per la violenza e per la guerra, ripeti, ti preghiamo: Oggi sarai con me in paradiso.
Ai suicidi, ai condannati a morte, ai disperati, ripeti, ti preghiamo: Oggi sarai con me in paradiso.
Ai nostri cari defunti, ripeti, ti preghiamo: Oggi sarai con me in paradiso.

Signore Gesù, morto sulla croce, accogli il gemito dei morenti e accoglili tra le tue braccia. Nell’ora della nostra morte ci consoli la tua presenza, e la tua misericordia senza limiti lavi le nostre innumerevoli colpe. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

XIV.) Quattordicesima Stazione: Gesù è deposto nel sepolcro

Ti adoriamo, Cristo, e ti benediciamo
Perché con la tua santa Croce hai rendento il mondo

Giuseppe d’Arimatea, preso il corpo di Gesù, lo avvolse in un candido lenzuolo e lo depose nella sua tomba nuova, che si era fatta scavare nella roccia; rotolata poi una gran pietra sulla porta del sepolcro, se ne andò. Erano lì, davanti al sepolcro, Maria di Magdala e l’altra Maria. (Mt 27, 59-61)

Signore, sei stato ormai sepolto e anche la pietra è stata rotolata. Ora davvero sembra tutto finito ai nostri occhi. Tante volte siamo convinti che nel mondo vinca la violenza, l’egoismo, la paura. Tu, invece, ci dai la speranza che è l’amore che vince, sempre. La morte non scrive la parola definitiva sulla tua tomba: fra tre giorni ti mostrerai vivo e ci darai la certezza che anche il nostro sepolcro non sarà la nostra abitazione definitiva, ma solo una dimora provvisoria.

A chi è stanco e sfiduciato. Dona speranza, Signore.
A chi è in crisi nella propria vocazione. Dona speranza, Signore.
A chi dubita del tuo amore. Dona speranza, Signore.

Signore Gesù, maestro di speranza, donaci di vivere questa virtù con la forza che viene dal tuo Spirito. Liberaci dalle nostre depressioni e dal tarlo del disfattismo. Aiutaci a vedere la realtà con i tuoi occhi per scoprire il bene nascosto al di là delle apparenze. Tu sei Dio e vivi e regni nei secoli dei secoli. Amen.

Padre Nostro

Padre nostro che sei nei cieli,
sia santificato il tuo nome,
venga il tuo regno,
sia fatta la tua volontà
come in cielo così in terra.
Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano,
e rimetti a noi i nostri debiti
come anche noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori,
e non abbandonarci alla tentazione,
ma liberaci dal male.
Amen.

Orazione Finale (Preghiera al Santo Crocifisso)

A Gesù, che è morto per noi sulla croce, che è risorto ed è vivo in mezzo a noi, eleviamo la nostra preghiera. Diciamo insieme:

O Cristo Crocifisso,
noi siamo venuti per chiederti perdono,
per implorare la tua misericordia,
per ripeterti il nostro povero amore.
Noi già sappiamo che tu vuoi perdonarci
perché hai espiato proprio per noi,
perché sei la nostra unica speranza, la nostra redenzione.
Ravviva in noi il desiderio e la fiducia del tuo perdono,
aumenta il nostro amore per te,

Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Brothers and sisters, the Crucified Son of God invites us to follow him with humility on the path of the Cross. May he enlighten our mind and warm our heart so that we can let ourselves be welcomed by him into the merciful love of the Father and may the truth of the gospel shine in us, through the gift of the Spirit. Blessed be Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

Penitential Act

Have mercy on us, Lord. For we have sinned against you.
Show us, Lord, your mercy. And grant us your salvation.
May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins and lead us to eternal life. Amen.

Oration

Lord Jesus, ensure that by walking with you on the path of the cross, we learn to follow you and entrust our lives to you so that you can continue through us the work you have begun. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

I.) First Station: Jesus is condemned to death

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

The religious leaders with the elders of the people gathered in council against Jesus, to have him killed. Then, having tied him up, they handed him over to Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate, after having him scourged, condemned him to death. (Matthew 27:1-2.26; Mark 15:1; John 19:1)

In his Passion and death, Jesus loves man as he is, with his fragility and his sin. Jesus does not distance himself from sinners but on the contrary, through limitless love, tries to awaken repentance, conversion and faith in them, in us.

Lord Jesus, who made us rich through your poverty. Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus, who makes us a new creation. Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus, who lives in us, hope of glory. Have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, condemned to an innocent death, give us a heart free from the spirit of revenge. Teach us to forgive the brother who chooses evil. Grant rulers the ability to propose just laws that recognize the dignity of the human person. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

II.) Second Station: Jesus takes up his cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

The governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the praetorium and, after mocking him, stripped him of his cloak, made him wear his clothes and took him away to crucify him. (Matthew 27:27-31)

Contemplating the Crucifix we learn to see in Jesus, with the eyes of faith, the obedient Son, the Son of God, true man and true God, who carries out the will of the Father. Even when everyone seems against him, he continues his faithful path to the mission entrusted to him by the Father. Let us also learn from him to do the will of God our Father in our lives.

Lord Jesus, innocent victim of sinful men. Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus, servant of God and author of life. Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus, you have given us the gift of your peace. Have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, give us the ability to give back to many brothers who are in poverty what we have in superabundance. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

III.) Third Station: Jesus falls the first time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

He took on our sufferings, he took on our pains and we judged him to be chastised, beaten by God and humiliated. He was pierced for our crimes, crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that gives us salvation fell upon him; by his wounds we were healed. (Is 53, 4-5)

By assuming the condition of the defenseless prophet, Christ wants to force us to open our eyes to the blinding reality of poverty. If our conversion is authentic, and is the fruit of the love and forgiveness of the Crucifix, it also ends up causing a social transformation of the world around us.

Lord Jesus, servant of God, hope of the people and light of the nations. Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus, you took on our pains. Have mercy on us.
Lord Jesus, who opens the eyes of the blind and frees the prisoners. Have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, make us worthy of serving our brothers who live and die in poverty and hunger throughout the world. Give them today, through our hands, daily food, and with our understanding love give them peace and joy. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

IV.) Fourth Station: Jesus meets his mother

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

When they saw him they were astonished, and his mother said to him: “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” And he answered them: Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” His mother kept all these things in her heart. (Lk 2:48-49,51b)

Grant, O Lord, that in contemplating the mystery of the Passion we do not lose sight of the essential things of life; grant us to contemplate you, your Eucharistic love, your crucified love, as the fundamental reality that allows us to understand and reorder everything else, as the only reality from which all the others receive light and clarity. We ask you through the intercession of the one who kept these essential things in her heart, Mary, Mother of Jesus, the our Lady of Sorrows.

So that the family is safeguarded and defended. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us.
So that love and dialogue prevail in families. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us.
For families to be the seed of the faithful community. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us.

V.) Fifth Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus carry the cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

While they were leading him away, they took hold of a certain Simon of Cyrene who was coming from the countryside and placed the cross on him to carry after Jesus. (Lk 23:26)

The cross remains a pure silent symbol of pain, for those who are not willing to experience solidarity with Christ and with their brothers. We then encounter the cross in our churches, we put it in our homes, we carry it on ourselves without having the courage to take up our cross together with that of Jesus.

Because those who help the poor persevere despite ingratitude. Help us, Lord.
So that those who volunteer are always guided by the Holy Spirit. Help us, Lord.
So that each of us is willing to help the poor and needy. Help us, Lord.

Lord Jesus, helped to carry the cross, give us the strength to be able to forget our problems and our pains in order to help our neighbors. VI.) Sixth Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

I say to you: Anyone will recognize me before men, even the Son of man will recognize him before the angels of God; but whoever denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. (Lk 12:8-9)

Lord, Veronica is one of the many generous women you have met in your life; her attitude reminds us of women, always attentive to their children, family, community, in every culture and religion in the world. We want to pray to you for all of them, so that even in the most difficult conditions they may be a source of relief and serenity, of unity and peace.

For all women. Hear our prayer, Lord.
For women whose dignity has been offended. Hear our prayer, Lord.
For all enslaved women. Hear our prayer, Lord.

Lord Jesus, help us to value and respect the presence of women in our communities and in our society. Forgive the offenses to their dignity and open our hearts to conversion. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

VII.) Seventh Station: Jesus falls for the second time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You.
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

“He committed no sin and no deceit was found in his mouth,” when outraged he did not respond with insults, and in suffering he did not threaten revenge, but entrusted his cause to him who judges justly. He bore our sins in his body upon the wood of the cross, so that, no longer living for sin, we might live for justice. (1 Pt. 2:22-24).

We don’t just follow Jesus, a man; we follow Christ, the Son of the living God. We walk a divine path. Where does Jesus’ path lead? It leads to the resurrection, to the right hand of the Father. This entire journey is understood when we talk about following. It is in it that we understand why the cross also belongs to the following: we cannot otherwise reach the resurrection, communion with God. We must first follow this path entirely if we want to be servants and witnesses of Jesus Christ.

For children who suffer trauma from the society we live in. We pray to you, Lord.
For the children who suffer and die because of the selfishness of the powerful. We pray to you, Lord.
For children who are victims of abuse. We pray to you, Lord.

Lord Jesus, grant us eyes capable of seeing the tears of too many children crushed by the weight of hunger, illness, exploitation, marginalization. Give us hearts capable of consoling, nourishing, welcoming, liberating. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

VIII.) Eighth Station: Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

A large crowd of people and women followed him, beating their breasts and wailing over him. But Jesus, turning to the women, said: “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children … For if they do this to green wood, what will happen to dry wood?” (Lk 23:27-28,31)

God eliminates evil not by ignoring it, but by transforming it with the power of love. By being together with men, accepting them and forgiving them even when they prepared the cross and death for him, Jesus reveals the extent of the love of the Father, to which he adheres with filial obedience: not even the cross and death induce God to becoming tired of loving man, of withdrawing from him, of abandoning him to his fate. The pain of the cross thus becomes a way of declaring his love for us.

For our brothers persecuted for their faith, let us pray. Grant the strength of your Spirit, Lord.
For those who are unjustly slandered, we pray. Grant the strength of your Spirit, Lord.
For the mistreated, imprisoned and condemned missionaries. Grant the strength of your Spirit, Lord.

Lord Jesus, treated like a criminal, console our brothers who suffer persecution, prison, marginalization because of faith in you. Give them the grace to be able to forgive and offer their sufferings for the salvation of their persecutors. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

IX.) Ninth Station: Jesus falls for the third time

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

All you who pass along the way, consider and observe if there is a pain similar to my pain, to the pain that now torments me … Their yoke is on my neck and has sapped my strength; the Lord has put me in their hands and I cannot get up. (Lam 1: 12,14).

Lord, once again your face and your knees hit the ground, because your cross has become even heavier. There are many who, every day, under the cross of lack of love, from misunderstanding, from superficiality, from drugs, fall and are no longer able to get up again. You alone can be for us the strength that keeps us firm or the help that makes us get up again.

Because we all know how to follow the Master who invites us to follow him. Grant your courage, Lord.
Because each of us finds the true meaning of life in You. Grant your courage, Lord.
Because we know how to build a better society. Grant your courage, Lord.

Lord Jesus, who proposed to the rich young man that he follow you, leaving everything behind, grant youth the opportunity to discover the beauty of faith lived with coherence and enthusiasm. X.) Tenth Station: Jesus is stripped of his garments

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made them into four parts, one for each soldier, and the tunic. Now that tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. (Jn 19:23)

Let us now recall to our minds all the sins we have committed, all the times we have offended God, harmed others and ourselves, all the times we have resisted the Word of God and his love. Of all these sins, of what each of us has committed, we are now called with humility to repent, to humble ourselves, to confound ourselves before the Crucifix.

So that no one in the world suffers from hunger anymore because of us. Grant us your love, Lord
Because we manage to free ourselves from the slavery of consumerism. Grant us your love, Lord
So that no man will ever trample on the right of his brothers’ right to life again. Grant us your love, Lord

Lord Jesus, stripped of your clothes and your dignity, help us to free ourselves from our thirst for possession. Make us understand the need to start living a more sober and simple lifestyle, respecting our brothers who lack necessities. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

XI.) Eleventh Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

It was nine in the morning when they crucified him. And the inscription with the reason for the condemnation said: The king of the Jews. With him they also crucified two thieves, one on his right and one on his left. (Mk 15:25-27)

Lord, your body has become one with the cross. How much pain, how much suffering you experienced, so that all of us were saved. It is to your cross that the sick, the handicapped and the lonely elderly are nailed every day. Lord, give us the courage to dedicate ourselves with commitment to alleviating the pain and suffering of the sick, because otherwise, in the face of our indifference, you will continue to be nailed to the cross.

To the sick, especially the terminally ill. Grant your consolation, Lord.
To the sick and alone elderly. Grant your consolation, Lord.
To the disabled, to those hospitalized in institutions, to those without anyone. Grant your consolation, Lord.

XII.) Twelfth Station: Jesus dies on the cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

It was around noon, when the sun was eclipsed and it became dark over the whole earth until three in the afternoon. The veil of the temple was torn in the middle. Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this he expired. (Lk 23:44-46)

Lord, your body hanging on the cross is suspended between heaven and earth. Everyone has abandoned you out of fear: only your mother and a few friends are down there crying for you. You share the fate of many men and women killed without reason, trampled upon without mercy until they are crushed. You took their side to overcome the absurdity of hatred and violence with your love. Give all of us the strength to love as you did, until the end, to transform the world with your love.

Because we are able to follow you until death. Grant us your Spirit, Lord.
Because we are made capable of dying rather than abandoning you. Grant us your Spirit, Lord.
Because we are made capable of giving our lives for our brothers. Grant us your Spirit, Lord.

Lord Jesus, who shared our mortal nature, help us to face death by accepting it with a spirit of complete abandonment to your will, aware that you are there to welcome us and give us eternal life. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

XIII.) Thirteenth Station: Jesus is taken down from the cross

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world

When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea, called Joseph, who had also become a disciple of Jesus, arrived. He went to Pilate and asked him for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be handed over to him. (Mt 27:57-58)

Lord, your death is similar to the deaths of millions of human beings: crushed by the ferocity of merciless tormentors. We are reminded of the innocent victims of terrorism, wars, injustices, but also the death of our loved ones, their last glance, their last breath. You are close to us and have shared our terrible fate as mortals to the full.

To the dead from violence and war, repeat, we pray: Today you will be with me in paradise.
To the suicides, to those condemned to death, to the desperate, repeat, we pray: Today you will be with me in paradise.
To our dear departed, repeat, we pray: Today you will be with me in paradise.

Lord Jesus, who died on the cross, welcome the groans of the dying and welcome them into your arms. In the hour of our death may your presence console us, and may your limitless mercy wash away our innumerable sins. You are God and live and reign forever and ever. Amen.

XIV.) Fourteenth Station: Jesus is laid in the tomb

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You
Because, by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in a white sheet, and placed it in his new tomb, which he had had dug into the rock; then having rolled a large stone on the door of the tomb, he left. There they were, in front of the tomb, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. (Mt 27, 59-61)

Lord, you have now been buried and the stone has also been rolled away. Now it really seems like it’s all over in our eyes. Many times we are convinced that violence, selfishness, and fear win in the world. You, on the other hand, give us the hope that it is love that wins, always. Death does not write the definitive word on your tomb: in three days you will show yourself alive and you will give us the certainty that even our tomb will not be our definitive home, but only a temporary home.

To those who are tired and disheartened. Grant hope, Lord.
To those who are in crisis in their vocation. Grant hope, Lord.
To those who doubt your love. Grant hope, Lord.

Lord Jesus, master of hope, grant us to live this virtue with the strength that comes from your Spirit. Free us from our depressions and from the niggle of defeatism. Final Oration (Prayer to the Holy Crucifix)

Let us raise our prayer to Jesus, who died for us on the cross, who rose again and is alive among us. Let’s us pray together:

O Christ Crucified,
we have come to ask you for forgiveness,

We already know that you want to forgive us
